Boothby Wildland
Restoring Nature, Reviving Life

Once an intensively farmed landscape, Boothby Wildland is now a beacon of ecological recovery. Managed by Nattergal, a UK leader in nature restoration, this project is bringing degraded land back to life while supporting biodiversity and long-term sustainability.
Spanning 617 hectares across England, Boothby was heavily cultivated until its acquisition in 2021. Decades of intensive farming left the land depleted, but now, nature is reclaiming its space. Native vegetation is naturally regenerating, and the future reintroduction of free-roaming pigs, cows, and ponies will help restore ecological balance. In due time, beavers will play a crucial role in re-establishing natural water systems, creating a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem.
Protected under a 30-year legal commitment, Boothby Wildland is more than just a rewilding project—it is a bold step toward a wilder, more resilient future where nature takes the lead.

How Do They Measure Success?
Boothby Wildland measures its progress not just in hectares restored but also in biodiversity reborn. Using cutting-edge methods such as camera traps, drone imaging, habitat surveys, and botanical studies, they track:
- The return of wildlife, from insects to large mammals.
- The carbon stored in soil and plants.
- The water quality of the West Glen River.
Their data-driven approach ensures that Nattergal's restoration efforts are effective and provide invaluable insights for future rewilding projects. By utilizing advanced tools like photo traps, drone imaging, habitat monitoring, and botanical research, they collect scientific data to assess and improve ecological recovery.
Their ultimate goal? To refine and scale nature-based solutions that will shape the future of conservation, ensuring long-term ecosystem resilience and biodiversity restoration.

Your Contribution: Supporting Ecological Renewal
At Boothby Wildland, every contribution fuels real, lasting change. Naturcontact has pledged to restore a significant amount of land within Boothby’s 617 hectares, creating a diverse, species-rich grassland and scrub through natural regeneration.
This regenerated area will become a thriving habitat, offering:
✅ Abundant food sources—flowering plants, berry-bearing shrubs, and nut-producing trees.
✅ Shelter and nesting areas for a wide range of invertebrates, birds, and mammals.
✅ A natural haven for iconic species, including barn owls, tawny owls, whitethroats, and yellowhammers.
Each square meter of grassland restoration costs £22.60, covering creation, maintenance, and ecological monitoring for 30 years—ensuring that every contribution makes a measurable impact on biodiversity.

Community Engagement: Connecting People with Nature
Boothby Wildland isn’t just about restoring landscapes—it’s about building a deeper connection between people and nature. In collaboration with the Universities of Oxford and Gloucestershire, they have developed a community-focused approach to engagement.
The number of full-time employees at Boothby has grown from 0.6 to 3.2 in just two years, reflecting the project's expansion and increasing impact. Between September 2023 and December 2024, more than 1,334 volunteer hours have been recorded, highlighting the strong public involvement.
Currently, 5 PhD research projects and 8 Master’s research projects are based at Boothby, contributing to scientific understanding and conservation strategies. There are also plans to expand public access by 6 km, bringing the total to 21 km of public footpaths, bridleways, and accessible trails, allowing more visitors to explore the evolving landscape.
By fostering education, engagement, and direct participation, Boothby is becoming a living classroom where visitors, volunteers, and researchers alike can experience the magic of rewilding firsthand.

Ecological Evolution: A Thriving Wildland
Nature Reclaiming Boothby Wildland
Nature is progressively reclaiming Boothby Wildland. Since 2022, the Boothby team has created 20 new ponds, bringing the total to 25, supporting amphibians and wetland species. The site is beginning to provide vital ecosystem services, including flood prevention, drought mitigation, pollinator habitat, and water purification.
Future Developments
Over the next two years, the Boothby team will undertake significant developments:
- The UK’s largest beaver enclosure, allowing free-roaming herbivores—including deer, pigs, ponies, and cattle—to coexist with beavers in the wetlands.
- An additional 6 kilometers of public footpaths, enabling visitors to observe beavers and other wildlife in their natural habitat.
A Milestone in Ecological Restoration
Nattergal is set to release Boothby’s first beavers in autumn 2025, marking a major milestone in the restoration of a self-sustaining, dynamic ecosystem. In the coming years, the site will continue to evolve, strengthening its role as a model for large-scale ecological restoration.
